Proper screen maintenance is essential for keeping your granulator running efficiently and ensuring optimal performance. Over time, screens can become clogged or damaged, leading to contaminated regrind and inconsistencies. By following a regular cleaning procedure, you can extend the life of your granulator and avoid unnecessary downtime.
What to Look For
These signs may indicate your grinder screen needs to be cleaned:
- Reduced throughput or slower grinding
- Excessive dust or fines in your regrind
- Visible buildup or blocked screen openings
- Unusual noise while the granulator is running
Screen Cleaning Procedure

1. Press and hold the stop button to stop the machine. Unlock the door switch to open the cutting chamber.
(Danger: Knives are sharp and fragile. Keep hands and body away from the knives. If needed, turn the shaft with a softwood board.)
(Caution: Wear eye protection. If you use compressed air to clean the equipment, you must wear eye protection and observe all OSHA and other safety regulations pertaining to the use of compressed air.)
2. Power down the grinder and lock it out.
(Caution: Before performing maintenance or repairs on this product, you should disconnect and lockout electrical power sources to prevent injury from unexpected energization or start-up. A lockable device may be provided to isolate this product from potentially hazardous electricity.)
3. Release the screw for the microswitch, release the expansion lockups, pull out the collecting loader/bin, loosen the hand wheel, open the screen holder, and pull out the sorting screen.
4. Clean the screen holder without striking it, deforming it, or scraping it.
5. Clean the screen without scraping it, striking it, or deforming it.
6. Reassemble the bin and restore power, reset the switch, and restart the unit.
(Warning: Before removing lockout devices and returning switches to the ON position, make sure that all personnel are clear of the machine, tools have been removed, and all safety guards reinstalled.)
Replacement and Support
If the screen is heavily contaminated or shows signs of damage – such as elongated holes – replacement may be necessary. A properly functioning screen should have straight, even holes throughout.
