A Look Back

In the early days, resin movement was entirely manual—think gaylords at the dock, buckets, ladders, and operators climbing to fill feed hoppers. It wasn’t safe, efficient, or scalable. That’s why conveying evolved—not only to save labor, but also to maximize floor space and machine throughput.

In fact, Conair’s roots go back to this very innovation. In 1957, founder John Reib introduced the first pneumatic conveying system for plastics—an invention that inspired our name: “CONveying with AIR.” Today, we still offer equipment like the DustBeater™ loader, a direct descendant of the original design.

There are Two Major Types of Resin Conveying Systems

1. Bulk Material Conveying Systems

These systems handle massive resin volumes—think railcars (200,000 lbs) or truckloads (40,000 lbs)—and move that material into silos or indoor storage bins. Depending on your plant’s layout and needs, these systems can include:

  • Dual-pump setups: A vacuum pump pulls material into the plant, while a pressure pump pushes it vertically into storage.

  • Single-pump push/pull cycles: Material is pulled in, then pushed to its destination, repeating until the load is complete.

Throughput rates typically range from 8,000 to 30,000 lbs/hour, making bulk conveying essential for high-volume operations.

2. In-Plant Conveying Systems

Once resin is stored, in-plant systems take over—delivering material from silos or bins directly to processing machines. The type of system depends on distance, throughput, and scale:
